Commentary: Founding fathers’ ideals of independence upheld today

Commander, Air Force Materiel Command

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- We all enjoy a great many freedoms. Over the July 4th weekend, many of us will get together for a cookout or to watch fireworks with friends and family as we celebrate our nation's 235th birthday. While we certainly look forward to those activities, we should also use the holiday as an opportunity to reflect on exactly why it is we're able to celebrate.

Historians tell us the men who signed the Declaration of Independence did not foresee the document's ultimate significance to future generations. The Continental Congress actually had more pressing concerns -- the nation's founders knew their signatures would be their death sentences if the American Revolution failed.

However, we have not maintained our independence on the courageousness of our forefathers alone. Since 1776, thousands of Americans have given their lives in service to our nation, and millions more have put their lives at risk to preserve our democratic way of life and our individual freedom. Warfighters will soon have improved weather situational awareness thanks to the efforts of the Electronic Systems Center’s Aerospace Management Systems Division Weather Programs Branch.

FalconView Weather is a net-centric, lightweight, easy-to-use capability that displays current and forecasted weather conditions for military use. It allows personnel to visualize weather information, such as observations, forecasts, pilot reports and radar, in overlays on the Portable Flight Planning System’s (PFPS) FalconView mapping capability.

PFPS is a suite of software for planning air missions. The addition of FalconView Weather to the PFPS software suite provides the aviator the ability to consider weather impacts in mission planning and to adapt flight plans based on weather threats. (More)

Personnel Center officials to stand up operating location at Wright-Patterson AFB
Will support AFMC civilians assigned to tenant organizations at Hanscom

RANDOLPH AIR FORCE BASE, Texas (AFNS)
-- As part of a continuing Air Force initiative to provide on-site civilian personnel recruitment support, Air Force Personnel Center officials will stand up an operating location at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, July 1. This is the last of five AFPC OLs to support commanders and missions at the Air Force's large civilian centers.

"AFPC will continue to work jointly with Air Force Materiel Command, Aeronautical Systems Center and Wright-Patterson AFB on the transition of civilian personnel staffing workload to the OL," said Michelle LoweSolis, AFPC civilian force integration director. "The OL will report to AFPC leadership while meeting the mission requirements of Wright-Patterson AFB."

In addition to the Wright-Patterson OL, AFPC officials activated OLs at Tinker AFB, Okla., in April 2010; the Air Force District of Washington in July 2010; Hill AFB, Utah, on Feb. 1; and Robins AFB, Ga., May 1.

"With a supported AFPC presence at the LCCs, AFPC will have first-hand knowledge of trends and mission requirements to ensure success in civilian staffing at Wright-Patterson AFB and the other LCCs," said Maj. Gen. A. J. Stewart, AFPC commander. "Our expectation is no degradation in the civilian hiring process and to relentlessly strengthen our Air Force for the challenges ahead." (More)

Hanscom personnel encouraged to use shuttle for TDY travel

By Peter Blackburn
66th Air Base Group Public Affairs

As an important reminder to all base personnel, Hanscom will continue to run its airport shuttle service throughout the summer for all those embarking on official travel, such as TDYs.

Shuttle rides are offered six times a day, Monday through Friday, at 6:15, 8:15 and 10:15 a.m. and 2:15, 6:15 and 8:15 p.m., except on holidays.

"In tight fiscal times with limited travel budgets, the Hanscom shuttle is the way to go," said James Taggart, 66th Logistics Readiness Squadron director. "Efficiency and savings is a main focus in hard times and it's a great, convenient service being offered."

To sign up for shuttle service, the 66th Logistics Readiness Squadron encourages base personnel to use "eShuttle," a web-based application that schedules travelers to and from Logan International Airport for the purposes of business travel.

command comments ...

"To the Men and Women of the United States Armed Forces: [On]  30 June 2011, I will retire as Secretary of Defense.  It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve and to lead you for the past four and a half years. All of that time we have been engaged in two wars and countless other operations.

It has been a difficult time for you and for your families, from long and repeated deployments for those in all four services -- and the associated long separations from loved ones -- to the anguish of those of you who have lost friends and family in combat or those of you who have suffered visible and invisible wounds of war yourselves.  But your dedication, courage and skill have kept America safe even while bringing the war in Iraq to a successful conclusion and, I believe, at last turning the tide in Afghanistan.  Your countrymen owe you their freedom and their security.  They sleep safely at night and pursue their dreams during the day because you stand the watch and protect them."

-- Remarks by Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates at the Pentagon, June 29, 2011
