Recently, the 751st Electronic Systems Group developed a set of quick reaction capabilities to provide upgrades for the E-8C Joint Surveillance and Target Attack Radar System.

These QRCs for Joint STARS augment the aircraft’s ability to detect, track and disseminate data on ground moving targets.

“We are upgrading the radar and improving the way data is distributed to enhance the support we provide warfighters,” said Patrick Dagle, 751st ELSG director. “This effort originated at the direction of the Air Force chief of staff and the team was able to complete development in six months, an incredibly short period of time.” (More)

Retiring group commander emphasizes mission always, people first

As Col. David DeNofrio prepares to retire from the Air Force July 1 with more than 25 years of service, he said no matter what he does in the future it’s going to be tough to match what he considers “the best job he ever had” – being the commander of the 950th Electronic Systems Group.

He served in that assignment from June 27, 2007, until he started terminal leave June 1.

Although he came to Hanscom on a humanitarian assignment in 2005 to deal with some family issues, Colonel DeNofrio said not only did he need to be here to deal with those issues, but this is where he wanted to be assigned and was thankful it worked out.

“I started here when ESC re-organized to squadrons, groups and wings, a great thing for our command, mission and people -- it put the ‘Air Force’ in AFMC -- and ended up being the first squadron commander for the Special Programs Systems Squadron, what is now the 630th ELSS in this group,” he said. “After going off and doing some other things, I came back to be the group commander for the 950th, which was really very special.” (More)

Wing Inactivation Ceremony to be held June 30

Electronic Systems Commander Lt. Gen. Ted Bowlds will host a Wing Inactivation Ceremony on June 30th at 10 a.m. at the Hanscom Parade Field behind the base service station.

During the event, the five numbered wings located on Hanscom will be inactivated.

The currently planned schedule starts with the inactivation of the 66th Air Base Wing, and continues with the inactivation of the 653rd Electronic Systems Wing, the 350th ELSW, the 554th ELSW and the 551st ELSW.

At his commander's call on May 20, General Bowlds said each of ESC's wings had achieved some tremendous things, and that their members should take great pride in this knowledge.

The acquisition wings will be reorganized to directorates, while the Air Base Wing will become an Air Base Group.

Following the inactivations, the Air Base Group activation will be held.

The Patriot Honor Guard and the Air Force's Band of Liberty will also participate in the ceremony.

In case of inclement weather, the event will be held at the Aero Club hangar.

New cyber chief: People key in meeting cyberspace challenge

By Donna Miles
American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- Cyberspace will provide "tremendous opportunities for the future, but also tremendous vulnerabilities," the commander of U.S. Cyber Command said June 3 in his first public appearance since assuming his new post.

Citing the explosion in use of the Internet, e-mail, social networking and instant messaging sites, Army Gen. Keith B. Alexander told attendees at the Center for Strategic and International Studies here that protecting the computer networks through which they pass is essential to U.S. national security.

Cyberspace has become a critical enabler for all elements of national and military power, General Alexander said.

"As President (Barack) Obama's national security strategy states, our digital infrastructure, therefore, is a strategic national asset and protecting it while safeguarding privacy and civil liberties is a national security priority," he said.

America's wealth and strength make it a particularly attractive target in cyberspace, he told the group.

"And one of the pillars of that strength, our military, is at risk to perhaps an even greater degree," he said, citing the military's dependence on its network for everything from command and control to communications, intelligence, operations and logistics.(More)

It will include an appearance by former Red Sox player, Bob “Monty” Montgomery, who also spent 14 seasons as the color commentator for Red Sox telecasts on WSBK-TV. In addition, those in attendance will enjoy local radio personality Michael Graham from WTKK as he serves as the master of ceremonies.

Immediately following the Heroes Homecoming ceremony, the 66th Force Support Squadron will kick off with Summer Bash. The entire family will enjoy high energy music by disc jockey Bob Caldeira. (More)

command comments ...

" ... leading in a time of change is particularly difficult because you don't have the same thing happening every single day. So leaders have to focus on that and I believe everybody in this room is a leader. I don't care how junior or senior you are. I don't care if you're in the front or in the back or in the middle. The strength of us as a military is our ability to create - to lead and to create and be sustained by great leaders and great leadership. ...

You succeeded because somebody mentored you. I ask you to go out of your way to mentor someone in your unit or some capacity behind you. That is the health, the strength of our organization in many ways. And then we take [c]are of ourselves, treat us, treat every single individual we run into as exactly as we would like to be treated and focus on that.

We stay healthy there no matter no matter what the future portends, we'll be in great shape.  ..."
