Four Hanscom individuals have won Air Force Materiel Command Comptroller Awards for their efforts in 2009.

Maj. Ned L. June won the Frank R. Faykes Comptroller of the Year Award, Master Sgt. Michelle E. Colburn, a section chief in the Accounting Support Division, was named Financial Management Senior NCO of the Year, Senior Airman Maurice P. Morrell, a pay services technician, was selected as Financial Management Airman of the Year and Technical Sgt. Leonard of the 66th Security Forces Squadron was chosen as Resource Advisor of the Year.

The awards come during a year when the 66th Comptroller Squadron was a finalist in the 2009 Excellence in Government Outstanding Team Customer Service Award competition, finishing in the top five of more than 100 federal agencies.

"These awards are further proof of what I've known for a long time, that the professional men and women of our Comptroller Squadron are among the very best in the Air Force," said Col. David Orr, 66th Air Base Wing commander. "The work they do in support of Hanscom and the Electronic Systems Center mission is exceptional, helping make Hanscom a better place to live and work." 66 MDG scores high on inspections; earns three-year accreditation

By Capt. Geoff Buteau
66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The 66th Medical Group recently received results from a November inspection by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care where they earned the highest rating, "substantial compliance," in 17 out of 17 chapters.

With this high score comes the maximum accreditation of three years, meaning, according to the AAAHC, the 66 MDG performance "implies a commitment to continual self-evaluation and continuous improvement."

"The most important part of the AAAHC inspection is that they confirm the outstanding patient care that's given to the community," said Col. Parker Plante, 66 MDG commander.

"So typically the [AAAHC inspectors] come in and take a look at all the different processes that we're doing, the patient care that we give, and they look through some of the records to make sure we're annotating everything," he said. "They do this to ensure the community knows that we are taking care of the patients properly, safely and that we're continually improving the overall patient care here."

Some of those 17 chapters include, patient rights, quality of care, clinical record and health information, occupational health and dental services. (More)

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Hundreds of Cyber Warriors from the Department of Defense, the commercial defense industry and military from all five services attending the Defending America Cyberspace 2010 Symposium here gathered to hear Gen. C. Robert Kehler, Air Force Space Command commander, give the opening luncheon remarks, Jan. 12.

The goal behind the conference is to facilitate participants in government and industry leadership positions to learn more about the most current cyberspace issues facing the nation.

During his remarks, General Kehler spoke to the many changes in AFSPC including standing up 24th Air Force, an operational command responsible for cyberspace, and transferring the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile mission to the Air Force's newest command, Global Strike Command. Additionally, he highlighted how leading the Air Force's cyberspace mission needs to focus on operations.

"Cyberspace is about operations, not communication. It is about operations, not a network. It is about how we do things to fight and win," General Kehler said. "We must assure our operations on the network."

He also drew attention to the importance of supporting the Joint warfighter.

"It is about developing a full spectrum of capabilities within cyberspace, leveraging air and space capabilities to build a unique Air Force contribution to the Joint fight.

"We are a team of Airmen, civilians and contractors who enable Joint forces to strike with precision, navigate with accuracy, communicate with certainty, see the battlefield with clarity and network with assurance," he added. (More)

… The wars we’re in right now are the last war, as we look to the future.  So 10 years from now, how much of what we have learned informs us about what we’re going to need to be able to do in the future?  And in my view, it’s not a set piece.  We’re not going to be able to match it and say, this is where we are right now and this is going to work for the next 10 or 20 or 30 years.  It’s just not going to happen. …

... The other thing is we don’t predict very well about where the next crisis is going to break out.  So how do we prepare for strategic surprise?  And how do we think about that?  And this goes back to sort of rebalancing our overall portfolio, which we’ve done, with the best military that I’ve ever served with and make sure we get it right for the future. ...

Naval War College,
Newport, R.I.,
