An Electronic Systems Center team led by Chief Technical Officer Dr. Tim Rudolph hosted some key senior Federal Aviation Administration officials to discuss mutual challenges and cooperative initiatives Jan. 29.

The session focused primarily on efforts to leverage enterprise architectures that support portfolio activities and information strategies that support data sharing and interoperability. The officials also discussed new technologies and avenues for continuing collaboration. Specifically, they looked to focus on identifying and cataloguing new technologies that can be transitioned.

"We had some very productive and open dialogue," said Dr. Rudolph, who emphasized that his Department of Defense role was not as an Air Force architecture lead and that ESC set up the meeting only to help establish and maintain cross-agency discussion and cooperation.

As the realm of computer technology advances day by day, software engineers are increasingly being called upon to be innovators, forward thinkers...the guys who make leadership's dreams reality. The ones working for Air Forces Central A6 Division here in Southwest Asia are no exception.

"The Air Force Force combat coders are all doing high-visibility jobs that have theater-wide impact," said Capt. Rodney Bagley, AFFOR Theater Maintenance and Software Development chief, deployed from Dyess Air Force Base, Texas. "Thanks to their efforts, people across all services are getting where they need to be within the AOR, faster and safer; and close air support is being provided to U.S. and Coalition ground forces more effectively than ever before." Staff Sgt. Carrieanne Richardson of the 66th Security Forces Squadron got the surprise of her Air Force career Jan. 31 when she was about to start her 12-hour shift in the United Arab Emirates - a phone call telling her she was selected for an immediate promotion to Technical Sergeant.

Sergeant Richardson, who is serving as the NCOIC of the mid-shift vehicle search area while deployed to the U.A.E., received a call from 66th Air Base Wing Commander Col. David Orr and a number of well-wishers last Sunday, informing her that Electronic Systems Center Commander Lt. Gen. Ted Bowlds has selected her as his choice for the Stripes For Exceptional Performers, or STEP, program. Under the program, the general had one stripe for Technical Sergeant, choosing from among all the enlisted members in ESC, whether stationed at Hanscom or at geographically separated units across the country.

"General Bowlds reiterated to me how tough the competition was for this STEP promotion, because we have an extremely dedicated and professional enlisted force across all of ESC," Colonel Orr said. "Sergeant Richardson is a professional Airman with an exceptional record, and she really earned this." (More)

command comments ...

The QDR concluded that the U.S. military must balance resources and risk among four major objectives.  The first is to prevail in today's wars -- the first time this objective has appeared in a QDR.  …

… The second major objective is to prevent and deter conflict by better employing and integrating all elements of national power and international cooperation, and should those fail, by possessing superior military capabilities and the means and will to use them.  …

… And in a world where, arguably, the most likely and lethal threats will emanate from failed or fractured states, building the security capacity of partners has emerged as a key capability for this department -- one that reduces the need for direct U.S. military intervention, with all its attendant political, financial and human costs. …

…. Our fourth major objective is to preserve and enhance the all-volunteer force -- America's single greatest strategic asset.  …

-- Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Adm. Mike Mullen, DoD News Briefing on QDR and the budget,
