Holiday greetings from the ESC Commander

Lt Gen Ted Bowlds

Electronic Systems Center Commander

It’s hard to believe, but another year is coming to an end, and the holidays are upon us once again. The past year was a year of change for those of us in the Electronic Systems Center and at Hanscom, but despite that change, we kept our focus on our vision: “War-winning information systems... on time, on cost!"

Our success in 2010 was once again a total team effort. In late June, we transitioned from Wings, Groups and Squadrons to new Program Executive Officers and directorates, without missing a beat. We moved many of our civilians from the National Security Personnel System to the GS system without a hitch. We continued recruiting, developing, rewarding and retaining an effective workforce, once again earning the Boston Globe’s recognition as one of the best places to work in Massachusetts.

All year long, our people have shown their deep compassion for those less fortunate, donating to the Combined Federal Campaign, and volunteering off-duty time to help veterans and others in local communities.

But now, it’s time to pause from our busy schedules and celebrate the holidays, sharing good times, good food and the company of friends and loved ones. The holiday season can be a hectic time. Please be careful as you celebrate. Don’t drink and drive, and don’t let your guests do so either. If you are traveling this season, take every precaution in preparing so you will have a safe journey.

As we gather with our friends and family to celebrate this holiday season and reflect on the many blessings we have, let’s pause to remember those men and women in uniform who will not be with their families this year because they are in harm’s way, serving their country in remote locations around the world. Although they can’t be with us, let’s keep them in our thoughts, our hearts and our prayers.

Marcia and I extend our best wishes to you and your families for a safe and truly happy holiday and a prosperous New Year. Together, we will make our Air Force even better in 2011.

Commander, Air Force Materiel Command

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio -- Another holiday season is upon us. At this time of year, we reflect on the past 12 months and recall the many gifts we've received. As we gather with friends and family to celebrate, we must also remember the sacrifices of those who have helped secure the very blessings for which we're thankful.

Today the Air Force has more than 35,000 Airmen -- military and civilian -- deployed to preserve the gifts of independence, freedom and democracy. Within Air Force Materiel Command, almost 1,200 members are deployed this holiday season, serving our country abroad.

I thank our deployed Airmen, and all of you carrying out the mission at home, for your service to our Air Force and nation. I am both grateful for and inspired by your professionalism and commitment to excellence. I ask you to maintain that vigilance and focus on high standards as 2010 draws to a close. (More)

Taking on the job of chief of staff just prior to a three-star command change might seem like a tall order, but if so, the Electronic Systems Center has found the right man for the job.

Col. John Drohan, who happens to stand six-foot-eight, is ready for that challenge and many more.

"I'm always open to doing something new, and I definitely enjoy working for General Bowlds, so it was easy to say yes to coming up and working in the front office," he said.

Colonel Drohan is replacing Col. Mary McRae, who is retiring. It was Colonel McRae who reached out to Colonel Drohan as a possible successor. (More)

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- A senior scientist from Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass., received the 2010 Harold Brown Award Dec. 15 for her breakthrough research in pioneering new infrared technology that will augment aircraft defense and impact numerous Defense Department systems.

Dr. Candace Lynch strengthened aircraft protection from heat-seeking missiles by developing counter-measure device technology involving laser material, specifically with the growth of orientation-patterned gallium arsenide.

The research physicist extended her technology to generate terahertz sources used in future imaging systems that enable the warfighter to see through brown-out conditions during helicopter landings or to image concealed weapons through clothing.

"Dr. Lynch's technology breakthrough is not only a national asset, but a testament to her dedication to science with a focus on national security," said Dr. David Jerome, the director of the sensors directorate in the Air Force Research Laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. (More)

A Tuesday morning event that began as a holiday safety briefing turned into an early Christmas present for the briefer.

As she departed the podium, Staff Sgt. Desiree Yago was called back to the front of the crowd by Cryptologic Systems Division Chief Col. Christopher Kinne. Colonel Kinne said she was to be recognized for her accomplishments related to her safety duties.

Instead, Chief Master Sgt. Brian O’Mullan, the division superintendent, handed a surprised Sergeant Yago, a logistics receiving technician, a small decorated box. As she opened the box, Colonel Kinne announced to the crowd that Sergeant Yago had received a Stripes To Exceptional Performers (STEP) promotion to technical sergeant.

Inside the box, a shocked Sergeant Yago discovered, were her new technical sergeant chevrons. (More)

command comments ...

"As we celebrate the holidays, please take the opportunity to reflect on our many blessings as Americans, and to remember the people who most enrich our lives. We also should contemplate our broader aspirations that, given the many demands of very busy lives, we often neglect to consider throughout the year.

Also, especially while many remain engaged in combat operations across the globe, we are thankful for the men and women who have answered our nation's call, and selflessly serve to defend our country and preserve our precious liberty. Those who are spending this special time of the year away from friends, family and loved ones are particularly worthy of the deep and abiding respect of fellow Airmen and of a grateful nation. We look forward to their safe return home."

-- Secretary of the Air Force Michael B. Donley, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton A. Schwartz and Chief Master Sgt. of the Air Force James Roy, holiday message, Dec. 13, 2010
