Work on critical
comm suite continues at rapid pace
66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Electronic Systems Center and Northrop Grumman Information Systems officials are continuing efforts to rapidly deploy an airborne communications suite that provides real-time battlefield information to warfighters. The Battlefield Airborne Communications Node, or BACN, team fielded another BD-700 business jet outfitted with the suite equipment in late March. The first operational flight of that aircraft occurred March 31, nearly a month ahead of an already-aggressive schedule. “This is a top priority for the Air Force and the Department of Defense,” said Col. Joe Keelon, the Family of Gateways Division deputy director. “BACN is proving to be a key component of DoD’s overall effort to fully realize and better exploit intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets in operational theaters.” (More) |

New financial
management system heading for next phase
By Patty Welsh 66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs An Electronic Systems Center team plans to give users of the new Defense Enterprise Accounting and Management System (DEAMS) much more capability by the end of May. Members of the 554th Electronic Systems Group, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, are preparing to deliver the DEAMS’ Increment 1, Spiral 2, which will go live to about 1,000 users at Scott Air Force Base, Ill. DEAMS provides a single financial management system that will be shared by the Air Force and the U.S. Transportation Command. It will replace outdated, often unreliable legacy systems and processes with state-of-the-art, proven software to manage financial transactions and produce financial reports. DEAMS will provide instant access to financial information with less reconciliation between separate systems. “Increment 1, Spiral 1 went live in July of 2007 and provided a commitment accounting function to 700 users at Scott AFB,” said Jim Salyer, DEAMS program director. “Spiral 2 will allow the users to have a full general accounting capability, and also provides the Air Force with a Chief Financial Officers Act-compliant accounting and management system.” (More) |

AFMC commander
tells senior leaders to conserve resources, money
By Ron Fry EGLIN AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. -- Earth Day 2010 took on a special meaning for some 90 Air Force Materiel Command senior leaders here April 22. AFMC Commander Gen. Donald Hoffman took advantage of the command's semi-annual Senior Leaders Conference kicking off on Earth Day to highlight the importance of the command's resource conservation efforts. Presentations on energy use highlighted the three-day conference where leaders also heard updates on several other important command issues. But the Earth Day theme took center stage. General Hoffman reminded the command's leadership of a New England proverb that declares, "Use it up, wear it out, make it do, or do without." The general added his own perspective on energy use and conserving the Earth's resources. "The world is like a terrarium, it's a confined environment," he said. "We have to ensure that the input and output to that environment stays balanced." General Hoffman reminded leaders that resources such as electricity and fuel are not the only resources they should keep a conservative eye on -- money is an ever-dwindling resource. (More) |

COMBINED
AIR AND SPACE OPERATIONS CENTER, SOUTHWEST ASIA -- Not
unlike the other men and women in the Combined Air
and Space Operations Center, combat coders are often
tethered to their computers -- their faces lit with
a pixilated glow, fingertips maneuvering above
matte-black keyboards, 'click-clacking' rows of keys
amidst the whir of computer fans.
