When the new, state-of-the-art combined air and space operations center, or CAOC, in Southwest Asia came on line Sept. 1, it marked a milestone for joint and coalition combat forces and for the Electronic Systems Center team working to make it happen.

"We're constantly striving to bring enhanced AOC capabilities to the warfighters, and I'm particularly proud of the efforts to bring this new facility in Southwest Asia on line," said 350th Electronic Systems Group Commander Col. Bill Cooley. "Our team had to overcome some significant challenges to make this possible."

Among the largest challenges: making sure the mission could continue unabated during the switch-over from the old facility to the new CAOC, said 350 ELSG Fielding Flight Commander Capt. Dennis Smith. (More)

By Kevin Gilmartin
66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs

An Air Force colonel who was a prisoner of war during Operation Desert Storm will be one of three guest speakers at the next Heritage of Freedom Speaker Series, set for 4 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Minuteman Club Ballroom.

Col. William F. Andrews, an F-16 pilot who was shot down over Iraq and captured on Feb. 27, 1991, will share his experiences as one of only 21 American Desert Storm POWs.  The colonel currently teaches at the National Defense University, Fort McNair, Washington D.C.  Joining Colonel Andrews as speakers will be Senior Master Sergeant Raul Ruiz, first sergeant for the 66th Air Base Wing, who will discuss his recent deployment to Balad Air Base, Iraq, and Capt. Scott Carstetter of the 653rd Electronic Systems Group, who will talk about his recent deployment experiences.

The Heritage of Freedom Speaker Series is a free event held quarterly that features three speakers, each of whom discuss their experiences serving in combat or while deployed. Their hard-hitting 15 minute presentations are followed by short question and answer periods. The event is informal, and features free refreshments available throughout the discussions.  Attendees are encouraged to remain after the addresses and talk informally with the speakers.(More)

The newly acting director of the 751st Electronic Systems Group compared his position to being the captain of a sport team.

Patrick Dagle stepped up from serving as the group deputy to his current position Oct. 10, when Col. Jim Lovell became acting 551st Electronic Systems Wing commander. He said he’s always been a team sport player, and is looking at the new assignment that way as well.

“The Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint STARS) program is an extremely busy program, with a high level of congressional and Office of the Secretary of Defense involvement, and is at a critical time,” he said. (More)

By Rhonda Siciliano
66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Hanscom employees will once again have an opportunity to help those less fortunate through the Combined Federal Campaign, the federal government's sole annual charity drive, which began last week and will run through Nov. 13.

This year's CFC drive at Hanscom has a goal of raising $244,000. During the campaign, people have the opportunity to choose from hundreds of local, national and international charities, and can make a donation in cash, through payroll deduction or online at www.cfceasternmass.org.

"CFC is a great opportunity to help more than 2,000 local, national and international charitable organizations," said Lieutenant Ferry, CFC Representative for Hanscom. "Even small donations add up quickly and help tremendously. We need everyone's support to make a difference by helping exceed our goal this year. If everyone contributes even a little we will be well on our way to reaching our goal for this year's campaign," Lieutenant Ferry said. (More)

command comments ...

We are losing far too many Airmen to Private Motor Vehicle (PMV) mishaps. Last fiscal   year, 47 Airmen were killed in motor vehicles, with 20 of those fatalities occurring on   motorcycles. This is nearly eight times the total number of Airmen killed in aviation mishaps,   including combat operations, during the same time period. Our goal from this year forward is   ZERO Airmen lost in preventable PMV mishaps.

All Air Force Airmen should operate motor vehicles in a responsible manner. This   includes the wearing of seatbelts, obeying posted speed limits, and avoiding distractions while driving. AFI 91-207, The Air Force Traffic Safety Program, clearly outlines safety requirements for operators and passengers of PMVs. Every Airman must understand the AFI requirements apply both on- and off-duty.

-- Michael B. Donley, Secretary of the Air Force and Norton A. Schwartz, Chief of Staff of the Air Force, from a memorandum for all Air Force personnel
