HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- Electronic Systems Center's and the 66th Air Base Wing's new Command Chief has had an illustrious 26-year career, serving as a military training instructor, a member of the Presidential Honor Guard and working on a historic Status of Force agreement while with NATO, but it wasn't always clear he would end up a professional Airman.

In fact, when Chief Master Sergeant Kenneth Williams graduated high school in South Carolina, he worked a number of odd jobs, including selling cleaning products door to door for the Fuller Brush Company.

"A military career was the furthest thing from my mind," he said. "But my mother observed my lack of focus, and strongly suggested I consider joining the military." (More)

Air Force officials make first major move toward a central network

By Michael Kerver
Air Force Network Integration Center

SCOTT AIR FORCE BASE, Ill. (AFNS) -- Air Force officials recently took the first major steps in moving e-mail and network services into what will become the central Air Force Network.

Within today's environment, major commands and some subordinate units operate their own networks, but the Active Directory and Exchange project looks to consolidates them under the operational control of a single commander.

Members of the Air Force Network Integration Center teamed with the 561st Network Operations and 81st Communication Squadrons at Keesler Air Force Base, Miss., and in 45 days helped them become the first operational base to migrate onto the AFNet.

"In a move affecting more than 6,100 users, 7,000 computers, and 700 organizational accounts, the success we enjoyed at Keesler reflects two years of planning and is truly symbolic of a team effort," said Senior Master Sgt. Dan Lester, the AFNIC's Active Directory and Exchange lead command manager. "The lessons we learned were invaluable, and we've already integrated them into the processes we'll use for future migrations."

The ADX program is part of a servicewide effort to transform cyber operations and consolidate network applications for better security, reduced cost, and enterprise-wide standardization. (More)

11/13/2009 - HANSCOM AIR FORCE BASE, Mass. -- When Airmen from Hanscom made a trip out to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo., a week ago, they were sure to be left with career-long memories. Surely the Air Force Academy football team's 35-7 trouncing of Army won't be forgotten, nor will the fanfare surrounding the game, from parachutists floating into the stadium and jet-fighters screaming-over it.

Then there are the memories of the formation of nearly 4,000 cadets on the Academy grounds before lunch one day, the crisp air and massive landscape of Colorado Springs, the teamwork exercises at 25 feet off the ground, or the arduous and sometimes uncomfortable flight to the Centennial State in a C-130, for 1800 miles, against the wind. command comments ...

... It’s your sense of service -- answering your country’s call, volunteering in a time of war knowing that you could be sent into harm’s way.  That's a sense of responsibility on your part -- the belief that the blessings we cherish as Americans are not gifts that we take for granted, they are freedoms that are earned.  And it’s your sense of unity -- coming from every corner of the country, from every color and every creed and every faith and every station -- to take care of each other, and to serve together, and to succeed together, as Americans.

So I’m here to say to all of you, all of you who serve, all the families who are here:  Of all the privileges I have as President, I have no greater honor than serving as your Commander-in-Chief.  We have the finest fighting force the world has ever known.  And it’s because of you -- because we've got the finest personnel in the world.  That's our most precious resource. ...
