Medal recipient, officers to share
accounts of warfighting experiences
Tomorrow's
event offers first-hand look at Korean War heroics, deployments
By Kevin
Gilmartin
66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs
Two Hanscom officers will share their deployment experiences
and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Thomas J. Hudner,
a retired U.S. Navy captain, will recount his Korean War
heroics during the second Heritage of Freedom Speaker Series
Jan. 23 at 4 p.m. in the Minuteman Club Ballroom.
The Heritage of Freedom Speaker Series is a free event held
quarterly that features three speakers, each of whom discuss
their experiences serving in combat or while deployed. Their
hard-hitting 15 minute presentations are followed by short
question and answer periods. The event is informal, and
features free refreshments available throughout the
discussions. Attendees are encouraged to remain after the
addresses and talk informally with the speakers.
Lt. Col. Denise Irizarry, commander of the 66th Medical
Support Squadron here, will discuss the operational side of
health care based on her experiences as a Critical Care Air
Transport Team nurse from Aug. 2005 to March 2006. The CCATT
is a three-person, highly specialized medical asset that can
create and operate a portable intensive care unit on board
any transport aircraft during flight. Based out of Ramstein
Air Base, Germany during her assignment, the colonel flew
more than 400 patient care missions, logging 100 combat
hours and 19 combat sorties. For her service, she earned the
Aerial Achievement Medal.

Cryptologic Systems
Group
During a brief stop
at the Cryptologic Systems Group last Thursday, Lt.
Gen. Ted Bowlds, commander of the Electronic Systems
Center, stunned one of CPSG’s finest with a rare
Stripes for Exceptional Performers promotion.
Unaware that the on-the-spot promotion was coming at
the end of a routine award ceremony where General Bowlds
presented various annual awards, brand-new Technical
Sergeant Sonia Vaquera appeared to be in shock as
the announcement was made.
Sergeant Vaquera was positioned alongside General
Bowlds as she was about to be awarded a Military
Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal (MOVSM).
Without skipping a beat, General Bowlds stepped to
the microphone and told the audience that the
rank of Staff Sergeant on the MOVSM certificate was
incorrect. He then announced to the crowd that
former-Staff Sgt. Vaquera was now Tech Sgt. Vaquera,
and the crowd erupted with a giant roar.

Officials
announce proposed bases for new cyber headquarters
WASHINGTON
-- Air Force officials here announced Jan. 21 possible
locations for the headquarters of 24th Air Force, a new
numbered Air Force focused on the cyber mission.
The proposed bases, in alphabetical order, are Barksdale Air
Force Base, La.; Lackland AFB, Texas; Langley AFB, Va.;
Offutt AFB, Neb.; Peterson AFB, Colo.; and Scott AFB, Ill.
Kevin W. Billings, the acting assistant secretary of the Air
Force for installations, environment, and logistics, said
every basing decision is made through a measured and
deliberate process to ensure the final decision is the best
possible outcome for national defense and is in compliance
with the National Environmental Policy Act.
In selecting a base from among the six candidate bases, Air
Force officials will consider cyber numbered Air Force
mission synergy, including proximity to other cyber
operational missions and access to scientific and technical
expertise, and communication/bandwidth capabilities.
Other evaluation criteria include facilities and
infrastructure, support capacity, security and
transportation access. Air Force officials applied the two
most important evaluation criteria -- cyber numbered Air
Force mission synergy and communication/bandwidth
capabilities -- to provide the final candidate basing list
above.
"In basing 24th Air Force, we recognize the tremendous
preparatory work several states have already done, and we
intend to use much of that information, but the mission will
ultimately define the final location," said Brig. Gen. Mark
O. Schissler, the Air Force Cyber Operations director.
Air Force officials intend to make a final base selection no
later than the end of June 2009. |

Lynn: Weapon system modernization
blueprint unsustainable
-- Inside the Air Force
William Lynn, President-elect Barack Obama’s deputy defense
secretary nominee, believes it “will be very difficult” for the U.S.

will have to find ways to halt traditional cost growth associated
with fielding new capabilities -- or consider program terminations.
Software upgrades address Astor-Joint

U.K. Sentinel R1 aircraft equipped with the Airborne Stand-off Radar

command comments ...
... I have been
fortunate to serve in our Air Force for almost
30 years. In those 30 years, my proudest moment
occurred on Oct. 14, 2006, when we dedicated our
Air Force Memorial to the more than 55,000
Airmen who have laid down their lives for our
country.
Today marks my second proudest day, because we
are dedicating this Enlisted Heroes Walk to
honor our enlisted heroes who have given so
much, who still inspire us today, and will
continue to inspire every Airman who will march
over this hallowed ground from this day forward.
In the 500 steps it takes to complete the
bomb-run lives will change and dreams will be
realized. Airmen will be born. ...

Rodney J. McKinley
