751 ELSG delivers JSTARS operational comm need on time, on cost

By Monica D. Morales
66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs

The completed installation of a Beyond-Line-of-Site ground-entry station in Virginia Jan. 22 marked the finale of a 751st Electronic Systems Group program that came to fruition in response to an Urgent Operational Need – and came both on time and on cost.

“In a time when delivering programs on cost and on schedule can be challenging, BLOS is a success in both respects, coming in early and on cost while also meeting an urgent warfighter need,” said Capt. Kate Stowe, BLOS program manager.

Beyond-line-of-sight communication capabilities use two straight lines, one going from an origination point to an orbiting satellite and another coming from the satellite to the second point to relay intelligence data.

Using Internet technology, these capability upgrades provide operators at workstations on board the Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System the ability to chat, e-mail and browse the Defense Department's secure Secret Internet Protocol Router Network from any location.

Nearly every speaker at this year's New Horizons Symposium, held Jan. 27 and 28 at the Marriott Newton Hotel, added a personal or organizational perspective on the event's theme: 'Rapidly Delivering Information to the Warfighter.'

From Dr. Donald Hanson, director of Air Force Research Laboratory's Information Directorate, who kicked off the event Jan. 27, to Electronic Systems Center Commander Lt. Gen. Ted Bowlds, who wrapped things up with his 'State of ESC Address' Jan. 28, speakers shared ideas on getting capability to operators quickly.

Many discussed how their organizations are responding to urgent warfighter needs, but also discussed the need to standardize faster delivery processes. Col. Steve Hocking, commander of the 850th Electronic Systems Group, said his group has reduced Integrated Strategic Planning and Analysis Network delivery cycles from one year to just eight weeks.

Base fitness specialists bust myths, buttress facts

Fitness

Kristen O’Connor rides a stationary bike as part of a comprehensive fitness assessment offered by the base Fitness Center while certified fitness trainer Paul Shoesmith monitors her progress. No pain, no gain.

That and dozens of other potentially flawed premises often cloud the minds of those looking to start or ramp up an exercise regimen. However, base Fitness Center personnel suggest getting the facts first, and they’re happy to provide them.

“Just ask us,” said certified fitness trainer Paul Shoesmith. “A lot of people are afraid to ask – either they’re afraid the question will sound dumb, or they’re afraid of the answer. But that’s why we’re here, to help people get the right information and to help them get healthy for life.”

So what about the pain thing?

“Some soreness is to be expected, especially when you’re starting out or are trying to work muscles you haven’t been working in a while,” Mr. Shoesmith said.

Mentoring celebration

The Mentor-Partner Initiative developed by 554th Electronic Systems Wing personnel located in Ohio, Alabama and Texas celebrated completion of its first-year Jan. 22.

The initiative, developed by members of the 554th Electronic Systems Group, the 643rd Electronic Systems Squadron, and the 754th ELSG, is "not your grandfather's mentoring program," according to program officials, but “a modern approach designed to develop trained, confident mentors and partners who will take ownership of their own development planning.”

The inaugural event last year hosted 18 completed mentoring partnerships, with pairings at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, Maxwell Air Force Base-Gunter Annex, Ala., and Randolph AFB, Texas. Throughout the year, mentoring workshops, helpful tips and events were held to facilitate the process and encourage both a personal and professional interaction between mentor and partner.

command comments ...

… I want to, first of all, thank all the men and women in uniform who are represented here. They are the best that this country has to offer. And the first thing I said to the Joint Chiefs in this meeting was how grateful we are for their service. The sacrifices that they and their families make are what are responsible for our freedoms, that sometimes we take for granted.

And as Commander-in-Chief one of my principal goals during my presidency is going to be to make sure that they have the resources and the support that they need to carry out the critical missions that keep our nation safe each and every day.

… And I know that all the Chiefs that are represented here, as well as Secretary Gates, are constantly thinking about what we need to do to make sure that people who are in uniform for the United States are getting the kinds of support that they need and that their families are getting the support that they need.

-- President Barack Obama
after Jan. 28 meeting with the Secretary of Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff
