Registration is underway for the Association of Old Crow’s Net-Centric Operations Conference and golf outing Sept. 21-22 at the Wentworth-by-the-Sea Marriott in New Castle N.H.

The conference, with a theme of “Enabling the Warfighter to Leverage Net-Centric and Cyber Capabilities,” will be held Sept. 21, and feature a number of speakers from Electronic Systems Center, including a presentation by 653rd Electronic Systems Wing Commander Ron Mason and a keynote address by  ESC Commander Lt. The objective of the conference, according to Mr. Mason, is to increase industry’s knowledge and understanding of net-centric and cyber warfare requirements and the technologies associated with those requirements.

Among the speakers already confirmed to address the conference is Lt. Gen. William T. Lord, Chief of Warfighting Integration and Chief information officer for the Air Force. In those positions, General Lord leads five directorates and two field operating agencies consisting of more than 1,000 military, civilian and contractor personnel supporting a portfolio valued at $17 billion. He integrates Air Force warfighting and mission support capabilities by networking space, air and terrestrial assets. Additionally, he shapes doctrine, strategy, and policy for all communications and information activities while driving standards and governance, innovation, and architectures for information systems and personnel.

Maj. Gen. select James Poss, the Air Force director, of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Capabilities,  will also be a guest speaker at the conference, along with Richard Byrne, vice president of Command and Control Center Programs at MITRE. (More)

642 ELSS completes first fixed site security installation in AOR

By Rhonda Siciliano
66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs

Members of the 642nd Electronic Systems Squadron recently completed the first fixed site security installation in the Southwest Asia Area of Responsibility for the Air Force's Combined Air and Space Operations Center. The project came in as a direct request to the Electronic Systems Center from Lt. Gen. Gary North, U.S. Air Forces Central commander as an immediate need in October 2007.

The 642nd built a flexible acquisition strategy to work around the delays in building construction, ensuring that the security system was in place before the CAOC became operational. Once a known baseline was established, the security installation was delivered on-time, on-cost and now provides enhanced situational awareness for Security Forces personnel overseas protecting vital resources in support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"We're proud to deliver this first ever AFCENT fixed site intrusion detection system to our warfighter on cost and on schedule with full capability to meet their needs," said Lloyd Corricelli, Combatant Commands Integrated Base Defense Security System program manager. (More)

WASHINGTON (AFNS) -- Air Force officials stood up a new major command to oversee all of its nuclear forces in an activation ceremony Aug. 7 at Barksdale Air Force Base, La.

Air Force Global Strike Command will provide combat ready forces to conduct strategic nuclear deterrence and global strike operations in support of combatant commanders.

"This week we achieved a major milestone in the activation of Air Force Global Strike Command," said Air Force Secretary Michael B. Donley. "The command will bring together our strategic nuclear forces under a single commander, and will provide combatant commanders with the forces to conduct strategic nuclear deterrence and global strike operations through intercontinental ballistic missiles, B-2 (Spirit) and B-52 (Stratofortress) operations."

The creation of Air Force Global Strike Command began last fall with the approval of a nuclear roadmap developed by Secretary Donley and Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz. Air Force officials took a critical look at its nuclear mission after discovering shortcomings in its procedures.

"Our expectation for the command is high, as it focuses on precision, reliability, and compliance on all nuclear matters," General Schwartz said. "Lieutenant General Frank (G.) Klotz will lead the new command fulfilling his role as the steward of the Air Force's contribution to America's deterrent posture and, more importantly, lead the Airmen who are the core of the Air Force's nuclear enterprise."

command comments ...

... This week, we will achieve a major milestone in the activation of Air Force Global Strike Command.  This command will bring together our strategic nuclear forces, our ICBMs and our nuclear bomber forces, under a single commander….  This command will provide the combatant commanders with forces to conduct strategic nuclear deterrence in global strike operations through the ICBM, B-2 and B-52 operations. We've reinvigorated in this process the accountability and compliance issues with respect to nuclear forces at all levels.  We have been reemphasizing training for inspectors at our inspection center and also at the MAJCOM level.       We've  added about $750 million over the five-year defense plan, in addition to an annual expenditure of about $4.2 billion per year on the nuclear enterprise.  And finally, we are standing up a fourth B-52 squadron also to provide for longer and more focused training.

-- Secretary of the Air Force, Michael Donley and Air Force Chief of Staff, Gen. Norton Schwartz, Aug. 5, 2009 at the Pentagon
