The 2009 DoD Acquisition Insight Days, hosted by the Defense Acquisition University in Dayton, Ohio, April 20-22, brought together more than 700 leaders and professionals from across the Department of Defense for three days of information and discussion.

The event kicked off with a series of breakout sessions on topics ranging from 5000 Series Updates to Developing Leaders and Risk Management.  The breakout sessions were repeated on day two, balanced with focused presentations by Lt. Gen. John Hudson, Aeronautical Systems Center commander, Gen. Donald Hoffman, AFMC commander, and a luncheon keynote presentation by Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz.

Lt. Gen. Ted Bowlds, Electronic Systems Center commander, gave a presentation entitled “Acquisition Physics 101:  Everything I Learned About Acquisition I Learned from Hollywood.”  Also in attendance was Greg Garcia, 754 ELSG director, who participated in a panel discussion on “Technology Acquisition for Cyberspace,” during two of the breakout sessions.

Day three featured Gen. Duncan McNabb, USTRANSCOM commander; Lt. Gen. Mark Shackelford, military deputy to the assistant secretary of the Air Force for Acquisition; Maj. Gen. Curtis Bedke, Air Force Research Laboratory commander; and, Maj. Gen. David Eichhorn, Air Force Flight Test Center commander, relating lessons learned and future acquisition policies throughout the day in individual presentations.

"What a great event,” said Col. Greg Gutterman, 554th Electronic Systems Group commander. "We heard from our entire chain of command. How many get to say that in a day and a half?"

Every speaker -- General Bowlds, General Hoffman to our chief of staff, General Schwartz -- reminded the acquisition team to prudently manage risk, constantly communicate with stakeholders, take ownership of our programs and...most importantly...deliver what you promise, “ the colonel said.

In May, members of the 554 ELSG will join the 754 ELSG at Maxwell Air Force Base-Gunter Annex, Ala. for the Montgomery Information Technology Summit themed “Collaborative Solutions—Accelerated!”
