Joanne Jordan,
lead information manager for the 950th Electronic Systems Group,
who has been totally blind since birth, has won the Outstanding
Department of Defense Employee with a Disability Award for 2008.
Each year, the Department of Defense sponsors this award program
to recognize and publicize the contributions and achievements
made by physically or mentally disabled federal employees within
DoD.
In announcing her selection for this prestigious award, Mary A.
Young of the Equal Opportunities organization of the Air Force
Personnel Center, said Ms. Jordan “is a great example of the
abilities and contributions that employees with disabilities
provide on a day-to-day basis.”
Ms. Jordan’s supervisors and coworkers in the 350th agree. In
her nomination for the award, they made it clear she has not
allowed her visual impairment to get in the way of her
professional or personal life. Her hard work and perseverance
both at work and in the local community made her worthy of this
DoD-wide honor, according to her supervisors.
Among Ms. Jordan’s many duties is serving as a key member of the
950th’s Contract Closeout Team. In that role, she personally
contacted more than 20 administrative contracting officers
across the United States to resolve contractor delivery and
invoice issues.

command comments ...
... As the November
elections approach, I encourage all Air Force
personnel - active duty, National Guard, Reserve
and civilian employees - to participate in our
Nation's political process to the maximum
permissible extent. It is important, however,
that in doing so we all comply with the rules
regulating the political activities of DoD
personnel. These rules - rooted in U.S. law -
are intended to strike the proper balance
between a government employee's involvement in
the political process while avoiding an improper
appearance of official DoD endorsement of a
particular political party, candidate, cause or
issue. ...
