A random selection of Hanscom people will have a chance to help the base earn recognition from the Boston Globe as one of the top 100 places to work in Massachusetts by taking part in a brief survey now through June 23.

Hanscom has thrown its hat into the ring for consideration of being recognized in the “Globe 100: The Top Places to Work” section of a November Boston Globe edition as well as on line. Nominated for the recognition by base senior officials, Hanscom will now be judged against other work places based on a short survey completed by a random selection of military members and government civilians, including Non Appropriated Fund employees.

“We used statistical software to randomly select 25 percent, or about 700 people from Hanscom to participate in the survey, and provided their e-mail addresses,” said Don Changeau, a sociologist in Electronic Systems Center’s Directorate of Personnel.

During a Military Affairs Council breakfast presentation at Max Stein’s in Lexington yesterday, 551st Electronic Systems Wing Commander Col. Dwyer Dennis focused on his wing’s multiple successes and on their combined ability to enhance battle management.

“What is going to drive these capabilities is being able to look for the information, exposing that information and getting it to the decision makers in the format that they need,” Colonel Dennis said. “Often we develop a pre-packaged solution, but other things and uses can be gleaned from the data to provide the best answer possible. We have to give the warfighter -- and the commander -- that flexibility.”

The products of the 551 ELSW, he said, certainly make big strides in accomplishing these tasks.

We must re-focus, fix problems

Gen. Carlson

Gen. Bruce Carlson

By Gen. Bruce Carlson
Commander, Air Force Materiel Command

By now you have heard about the resignations of the Secretary and Chief of Staff of the Air Force. This was unprecedented and I want to make sure you know I am fully committed to finding and fixing the root causes of the Air Force shortfalls recently identified by the Secretary of Defense. Together we owe it to the citizens of our great nation to address this situation directly in order to resolve systemic problems and regain our credibility as guardians of our nation's nuclear arsenal. Let there be no misunderstanding, the stewardship of our nuclear enterprise is one of our most sacred responsibilities–-and we will identify and fix the gaps in our execution of this critical strategic mission.

The facts surrounding the unauthorized B-52 flight with live nuclear weapons onboard and the recent mis-shipment of four Mark 12 nose cones to Taiwan highlighted a brutal truth: there are problems within our nuclear enterprise. Some of those problems lie within this command and we will fix them.

Air Force Chief of Staff sends letter to all Airmen

Gen. Moseley

Gen. T. Michael Moseley

June 10, 2008

It has been my highest honor to serve our great country as an Airman for almost 37 years. In peace and in war, I've had the privilege of serving alongside countless outstanding men and women -- Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines -- who have pledged themselves to our country's defense. I was honored and humbled to be appointed the Air Force's 18th chief of staff and have been proud to serve our Airmen, their families and the American people in that role. Upon taking the oath of office, I committed myself to Secretary Wynne and to the Air Force to ensure we provided the right forces at the right time so that our nation and its allies are victorious in the Global War on Terror and ready to meet future challenges. Working to fulfill that commitment and do the right thing for America and its Airmen, at a crucial point in history, has been the most rewarding experience of my life.

Given my pride in our service and its distinguished history, you can imagine how it pained me to read the recent report concerning lapses in the control of nuclear-related assets.

Mission, people rank as top priorities of new 350 ELSG commander

Col. Cooley

Col. Bill Cooley

By Monica D. Morales
66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs

When needing to meet a challenge head on, Col. Bill Cooley heeds the words of General of the Army George C. Marshall, who said, “fix the problem, not the blame.” Colonel Cooley, the newest commander of the 350th Electronic Systems Group, in fact, considers that advice central to his leadership approach.

“As I’ve worked through challenges in the past, I’ve reflected on this principal and shared it with my staff as a way to overcome problems,” Colonel Cooley said. “Taking this approach usually helps to solve a conflict and move forward rather than spend time focusing on negative, non-productive issues.”

In his new post as 350 ELSG commander, Colonel Cooley is responsible for the development, testing, fielding and sustainment of 19 Air and Space Operations Center (AOC) sites worldwide, more than 100 Theater Battle Management Core System force-level locations, more than 100 TBMCS unit-level sites, as well as a variety of Foreign Military Sales programs.

By Rhonda Siciliano
66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs

With just two weeks to go Hanscom is gearing up for a double header celebration on June 27 when the base will host its Heroes' Homecoming celebration immediately followed by the annual Summer Bash festivities.

The Heroes' Homecoming event will begin at 2:30 p.m. at Memorial Park located behind the Hanscom Clinic. In the event of inclement weather the ceremony will be moved inside to the Aero Club hangar. Both venues have been designated by Lt. Gen. Ted Bowlds, Electronic Systems Center commander, as Alternate Duty Locations. Attendees at both events are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets as seating is limited at the outside venue.

The Homecoming event will honor more than 60 Airmen who have been deployed over the past six months and their families. The pep rally style ceremony will include appearances by one of the most lethal scorers in Major League Soccer, the New England Revolution's Taylor Twellman; an appearance by Blades, the official mascot of the Boston Bruins and local radio personality and author Michael Graham from 96.9 WTKK. The event will also include a performance by the East Elite Cheer Squad from Tewksbury, Mass.

command comments ...

… Every day, amazing Airmen and women are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Beyond that, you support all the services worldwide. In particular, the strike capabilities fielded by this command form the backbone of our strategic deterrence – a role that is even more important with our ground forces so decisively committed to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Since September 11th, the Air Force has flown more than one million missions – ranging from lift to medevac to close air support – including tens of thousands of sorties flown over America’s skies to protect our homeland, many out of this base.

… Put simply, without your contributions in the skies, and in many cases on the ground, America’s war effort would simply grind to a halt. Little of that is widely known or appreciated. But I can assure you that I value everything you are doing in support of the nation. And every soldier and Marine on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan is profoundly grateful you overhead – watching out for them.
