HANSCOM AFB, Mass. – Work being done here by the Electronic
Systems Center and its Federally Funded Research and Development
Center partner MITRE Corp. is helping pave the way for a sound
withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq.
ESC and MITRE International Operations specialists, in concert
with a number of ESC acquisition groups, completed work earlier
this year on a comprehensive Iraq Air Sovereignty Master Plan, a
roadmap that will help enable the Iraqi Air Force to operate
without U.S and coalition assistance.
“We’re helping to bring U.S. warfighters home by laying out a
plan that will position, and properly equip, the Iraqi Air Force
to operate on their own with regard to air sovereignty,” said
Charlie Bell, a MITRE engineer working with ESC’s International
Operations Division.

Mission Planning Users' Conference
attracts about 2,000 attendees
By Monica D.
Morales
66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs
The 14th Mission Planning Users’ Conference held last month in
Las Vegas attracted nearly 2,000 attendees who convened with the
aim of furthering dialogue between various mission planning
communities.
"We had nearly record attendance and the response from our attendees
has been overwhelmingly positive," said. Col. Gary Hetland, 951st
Electronic Systems Group commander. "MPUC is a unique opportunity to
bring together MAJCOMs, our sister services, foreign allies,
aircraft and weapons operators, and mission planning software
developers. I'm proud of the accomplishments of our great team in
successfully organizing and conducting an event of this magnitude."
The MPUC 2008 -- held from Nov. 17-21 -- was sponsored by the
951 ELSG, along with the Paul Revere Chapter of the Air Force
Association. Each year, the conference aims to present a venue
for the mission planning enterprise to exchange ideas, promote
mission planning, train on the latest technology and gain
perspective on future mission planning innovations.
Of the nearly 2,000 registrants in attendance, 100 were foreign
allies representing more than 20 countries. Additionally,
attendees included participants not only from the Air Force, but
also the Army, Navy, special forces and industry.

Staff Sgt. Crystal
Vargas of the Cryptologic Systems Group, Lackland
AFB, Texas, was coined last week by Lt. Gen. Gary L.
North, commander, 9th Air Force and U.S. Air Forces
Central.
AFCENT recognized Sergeant Vargas for successfully
managing the transition of over 7,000 Sea Land
containers and subsequently accounting for the
entire inventory of containers. During General
North’s presentation, Sergeant Vargas was cited for
"outstanding continuous leadership and continuity
while standing up a function new to the Air Force at
Balad.”
Sergeant Vargas was deployed to Joint Base Balad,
Iraq, to help integrate Army functions with Air
Force logistics matters at the site. This project
has freed up Army personnel to handle other wartime
duties.
Sergeant Vargas is currently on her third
deployment, and has made positive impacts at each
site, according to her superiors. Her actions have
been lauded repeatedly by Air Force and Army
commanders.
During her last deployment, Sergeant Vargas was
assigned to an Army unit where she was the first Air
Force member to lead an Army convoy.

The base
will honor and welcome home more than 40 of its Airmen who
have served on deployments over the past six months at the
Heroes’ Homecoming ceremony that will take place Dec. 12, in
the Aero Club hangar at 12:30 p.m. To allow as many people
as possible to join in the celebration, the Heroes'
Homecoming event has been declared an alternate duty
location.
The event is scheduled to include special appearances and
autograph sessions with the bassist for the rock group
Aerosmith, Tom Hamilton, and former New England Patriots
quarterback Steve Grogan, as well as members of the New
England Patriots cheerleading squad. Local radio talk show
host and author Michael Graham from 96.9 WTKK, will once
again serve as the Master of Ceremonies for the homecoming
event.
Since the homecoming event will take place during the lunch
hour, free pizza and submarine sandwiches will be available
to those in attendance -- both deployers and attendees.

... Today, the
threat of cyber attack by both state and
non-state entities is very real, persistent,
sophisticated, and dangerous.
The move to cyberspace networks has undoubtedly
provided our Armed Forces with a very valuable
capability… but, it has also greatly increased
our vulnerability. While we have classified
networks in DoD, in many ways we are like
corporate America. Many of our business systems
rely on open networks. DoD actively defends
against thousands of network attacks,
intrusions, and other incidents every day. In
response, the Nation and DoD have added billions
of dollars and innumerable initiatives to
counter cyber attacks.
DoD continues to work in concert with other
government agencies, industry, international
partners, and academia to assist in the
mitigation of these cyber-threats. …
