551 ELSW teams meet successes, learn
lessons at Empire Challenge
By Monica D.

66th Air Base Wing Public Affairs
For most, a scorched desert landscape in the midst of a
munitions drop hardly translates into a backdrop for success.
For 551st Electronic Systems Wing teams participating in Empire
Challenge 2008 last month, however, it was what set the stage
for victory.
“We achieved multiple successes with our technology,” said Dave
Setser, Airborne Warning and Control System Net-centric
Capability Integration Branch chief at the 551st Electronic
Systems Group. “We brought our work together with everything
going on in the event, in addition to working with the
challenges presented by getting all the aircraft into the
airspace and ensuring that all the networks were synchronized
and configured correctly.”
Empire Challenge, which concluded on Aug. 1, is a demonstration
event designed to test multi-intelligence joint and coalition
interoperability and services’ data, as well as that of
coalition partners. The exercise, held in part at China Lake
Naval Air Warfare Center, China Lake, Calif., also included
Australian, British and Canadian participants.
ESC led or participated in several initiatives at Empire
Challenge. The 551 ELSW and 653rd Electronic Systems Wing
collaborated on the Airborne Networking Line of Sight/Beyond
Line of Sight Initiative. The 851st Electronic Systems Group and
751st Electronic Systems Group participated in the Mission
Execution Program /BMC2 Initiative, with the 751 ELSG also
taking part in the Joint STARS–Airborne Standoff Radar
Interoperability Program. (More)

... I first want to
say something to our military families: I can't
thank you enough for all the sacrifices you have
given. There is no question we have the finest
military in the world, and one reason why is
because we've got the finest military families
in the world. These have been tough times on our
families and I want to thank you for staying in
the fight.
I'm also proud to be here with people who have
volunteered in the face of danger. There is no
more important mission than to protect the
United States from harm. Many of you volunteered
after the attacks on the homeland on 9/11, 2001.
You understand what I know: that it is best to
defeat the enemy overseas so we do not have to
face them here in the United States.
We have been unrelenting in our efforts to
protect America, and I want to thank you for
your service. ...
