ESC activates 'new' wings with historic ceremony

By Chuck Paone
ESC Public Affairs

Today is the first day of the new Electronic Systems Center, Commander Lt. Gen. Chuck Johnson said May 11 during the activation ceremony for ESC’s four newly numbered wings.

“Today, we mark the beginning of a proud new era in our center’s history,” he said. “We now have a center with five great wings.”

In addition to the four numbered acquisition wings, the general also noted and praised the 66th Air Base Wing, which provides all base support at Hanscom. Without the efforts of the 66th ABW, the center wouldn’t be able to meet its war fighter support commitments, the general said. (more)

Workplace initiative gets green light

By Capt. Sarah Schwennesen
66 ABW Public Affairs

On Monday, the Electronic Systems Center Corporate Board, chaired by Electronic Systems Center vice commander Maj. Gen. Arthur Rooney, convened to review and approve some Workplace Initiatives that have been identified across the base. These Initiatives are projects that have been identified by units as essential to improving work centers at Hanscom.

The Workplace Initiative is one of five "W's" that Lt. Gen. Johnson has identified to allocate resources. The other "W's" are: Warfighter, Workforce, Workload and Worktools.

The 120 projects that were submitted in response to the initial tasker were divided into two groups, contract work and self-help work. They were then ranked against each other, in relation to their relevance toward improving the workplace. There were some projects that did not fit the intent of the workplace improvement tasker and these were placed on a third list that will be addressed separately.

Projects included work such as plaster patching walls, shampooing or replacing carpeting, cleaning or repainting wall surfaces, painting walls and replacing ceiling tiles and blinds on windows. Maj. Gen. Arthur Rooney allocated $217,000 toward some of the projects on both lists, reinforcing the idea that Hanscom personnel deserve to have a great place to work. (more)

As part of a recent two-pronged May “Wingman Call", members of the Electronic Systems Center’s Cryptologic Systems Group pitched in to bring positive changes to the local San Antonio community.

CPSG’s Wingman Call activities, planned within the city, allow Airmen, both military and civilian, to get to know one another and build connections, trust, and the skills necessary for to look out for each other, according to Sharon Holman, CPSG’s “Wingman Call” guru. These volunteer events also greatly benefit area residents in various ways.

During May’s Wingman Call, CPSG members volunteered for “Day at the Park,” where they helped to clean up San Antonio’s Woodlawn Park, and at the city’s Food Bank, where they sorted and distributed thousands of donations.

Standard Desktop Configuration keeps AFMC ahead of "bad guys"

By Kathleen A.K. Lopez
Air Force Materiel Command Public Affairs

5/15/2006 - WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio (AFMCNS) - In an effort to stay one step ahead of the cyberspace "bad guys," aka computer hackers, the Air Force is implementing a new standard desktop configuration, or SDC, that will establish a uniform and secure desktop environment.

For the Air Force "good guys," this means there will be one more layer of added protection for computer users, thus heightening their security settings. The new configuration is mandatory for all Windows-based work stations connecting to both the NIPRNet (unclassified) and SIPRNet (classified) systems. Additionally, there will be standardization of common office software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet Explorer, PowerPoint, Outlook, Norton Antivirus, Adobe Acrobat Reader and others.

Arthur Rooney will host the next 'Book of the Month Club’ session May 31 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in the Hanscom Club’s Tuskegee Room.  The featured book, Good to Great by Jim Collins, discusses the research he and his team conducted, using strict benchmarks to identify a group of 11 elite companies that made the leap from good to great and sustained that greatness for at least 15 years. The companies that made the list, and those that did not, provide a vast supply of strategies and ideas that leaders can use within their own organizations to propel them to greatness, according to the book’s publisher.

New service dress prototypes pique interest

By Master Sgt. Mitch Gettle
Air Force Print News

5/17/2006 - WASHINGTON -- Based on feedback received during visits with Airmen across the Air Force, the Air Force Uniform Board is reviewing several concepts that Airmen have suggested regarding the appearance of the service dress uniform.

Some of the informal feedback about the current service dress includes Airmen wanting to revamp the service dress to look more military, like the other services.  One senior airman said, “the current uniform resembles a cheesy business suit.”   Another staff sergeant said, “think world’s most dominating air power, not CEO,” and another described it as a “cheap leisure suit.”

Other comments have suggested that the uniform needs to reflect the Air Force’s history more. On an Internet message board an Airman recently wrote, “I want to look good and be proud of my AF heritage.”   Another Airman wrote that the dress uniform pales in comparison to any of the other services.  "We need something that distinguishes us as proud members of the U.S. military.”  (more)

command comments ...

Three years ago, in March 2003, we saw the courage, professionalism and determination of our fighting forces.  They swept toward Baghdad with lightning speed, aided not only by our well-known ability to put bombs precisely on target, but also by unprecedented satellite and other real-time intelligence we wisely invested in years ago – our Predator and Global Hawk unmanned aircraft.  With the ability to listen in to enemy plans and, in the Predator’s case, even provide coalition forces with a TV eye in the sky for hours at a time.

JOINT STARS jets pinpointed enemy tanks and trucks for our ground forces, and AWACS organized airpower to pound the enemy and give the battle to us.  Within a month, we saw statues of Saddam Hussein being toppled as joyous Iraqis danced in the streets.  And our Airmen had a leading role in ending this brutal chapter in Iraqi and Middle East history.
